The man who allegedly robbed a Morgan Hill convenience store at knifepoint Aug. 4 surrendered to authorities and confessed to his involvement in the crime, police said.

Roman Gonzalez, 18, turned himself in at the Morgan Hill police station last Tuesday, Aug. 21, according to Sgt. Troy Hoefling.

“He turned himself in because he thought he had a warrant” for his arrest on suspicion of the crime, Hoefling said. He added that Gonzalez told police he “felt bad” about the crime.

After surrendering at the police station, officers made sure he was telling the truth by placing him in a lineup, in which a witness to the crime pointed him out. Plus, Gonzalez had “intimate knowledge” of the incident that only someone who was at the scene would have.

Gonzalez was booked at Santa Clara County Jail on suspicion of armed robbery.

Police responded to Paul’s Liquor, 17020 Condit Rd., about 1:15 p.m. Aug. 4 in response to the armed robbery that had just occurred, police said shortly after the incident.

The store clerk told police that the suspect entered the store, selected a beverage and approached the counter as if he was going to pay for the item, authorities said.

When the clerk opened the cash register, the suspect pulled out a knife and pointed it at the clerk, police said. Fearing for his safety, the clerk stepped back and the suspect jumped on the counter and removed an undisclosed amount of cash from the open register.
