Mermaids strengthen their land legs

San Martin Gwinn Elementary is proud of their 60 Mini Mermaid Runners. These third- through sixth-grade girls will finish their sixth week running club at the Morgan Hill Marathon's 5K. Through the generous scholarship program of the nonprofit organization Mini Mermaids, based out of Santa Cruz, the team has been busy building confidence, self-esteem and learning about making healthy choices through weekly lessons on top of their running training. Shannon Rafat, the leader of the group, and her volunteer coaches, fifth grade teacher Jan Skapik, Jennifer Bajarin, Toni Langly and Teresa Perez are grateful for this program and Greg Richards with SVE Event Timing. The group will be volunteering this weekend at the Morgan Hill Fit Run and is gearing up for their own 5K. Watch for a sea of turquoise and yellow as there will be about 100 mini mermaids from around the area running this year.
