Rain washes out key prep games

MORGAN HILL -- Tony Vasquez was 3 1/2 hours away from watching his Lady Acorns take on Santa Cruz in a Central Coast Section semifinal when he received dreary news.

Wednesday's showdown at Valley Christian High had been pushed back to Friday because of rain.

"I was a little disappointed," Vasquez said Thursday. "How do you rain out a game on [artificial] turf anyway?"

This week's rainfall in the South Valley wasn't exactly a monsoon, but it was enough to postpone the Division III girls soccer match and several other marquee games. That included Game 1 of the El Toro Series between Live Oak and Sobrato, who were scheduled to meet Wednesday at Sobrato High.

Instead of playing for a trip to CCS finals, the No. 2-seeded Lady Acorns fine-tuned what they could.

"We were ready to play, so the girls didn't have much to do," Vasquez said. "We ended up just going out for pizza."

Live Oak (13-4-4) and No. 3 Santa Cruz (13-3-4), ranked a respective Nos. 14 and 12 by the San Jose Mercury News, will try again at 4:30 p.m. today at Valley Christian. The winner will return to VCHS Saturday to face Sacred Heart or Scotts Valley.

The El Toro Series also will pick up today at 3:30 p.m. at Live Oak's Sarich Field.
