MORGAN HILL -- Juan Baca was one of few freshmen who made the cut for varsity sports at Live Oak this year -- if you watched him play soccer, you understood why.
With his speed and tenacity, Baca kept pace with his upperclass opponents and had a hand in creating several scoring opportunities for his young team.
Freshman Will Watson was just as key for Sobrato's league-champion winning boys water polo team.
Anchoring the defense, Watson was named division Freshman of the Year.
"He really stepped up for us," coach Paul Harris said. "You don't see freshmen become big players, so Will was an exception. He plays with experience and is very competitive."
Harris, who played at UC-Santa Barbara, said Watson hopes to play for a Division I college program.
"He's definitely on track," Harris said.
