Bulldogs dethrone Silver Creek in league opener
Jan 7, 2009
By Scott J. Adams - Sports Editor

SAN JOSE -- There is an adage about big games bringing out big performances.

Sobrato's Ryan Williams and Bryan Bradley lived up to that Tuesday against defending league champion Silver Creek.

Williams and Bradley combined for 27 of Sobrato's 31 points in the third quarter, a stretch that carried the Bulldogs to an imposing 77-62 victory in their Blossom Valley Athletic League-Santa Teresa Division opener at Silver Creek High School. Williams ended with a team-high 21 points, and Bradley had 16.

"They were having a face-off or something," Sobrato coach Lawrence Crawford joked during a telephone interview Wednesday. "It was almost like one scored; the other scored. One scored; the other scored. It was fun to watch."

The Bulldogs (11-2 overall, 1-0 BVAL) led 65-41 at the end of the third quarter after building a 34-28 halftime lead. They were outscored 21-12 in the final 10 minutes -- but victory was well in hand.

Sobrato, which also got 19 points from Chris Bradley, snapped a three-game win streak for Silver Creek (7-6, 0-1).

"I think it's really big," Crawford said. "The crowds can get pretty big, especially for a defending champ.

"Both teams have high expectations. The tension was there. Only one team in our division gets an automatic bid to the section playoffs. So we really had to bear down. Every game is a statement game."

The Bulldogs have back-to-back home matchups next, starting with Del Mar at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
