HOLLISTER -- The girl's soccer season is two games old, and Fabiola Diaz and the Live Oak Lady Acorns are rolling.
Diaz churned in her second straight two-goal performance Monday, helping Live Oak stay undefeated with a 3-1 victory at San Benito. The Acorns, although flat at times Monday, improved to 2-0 in nonleague play.
"We came out flat," Live Oak coach Tony Vasquez said. "I think Hollister worked harder the entire game. We just capitalized on some scoring opportunities. That says a lot to me. It says we can not play well but still get a win."
Diaz also netted a pair of goals in the Acorns' season-opening win over Evergreen Valley last week.
Against San Benito, Diaz was assisted by Julia Hartl and Amanda Morgan. Hartl provided the game-winning goal in the 58th minute with assists by Morgan and Megan Rauschnot.
The Haybalers had their seven-game undefeated streak snapped.
"I think they were a little bit tired," San Benito coach Ben Alvarez said. "(Live Oak) played a good game. You can't take that away from them. They have a good team. But we got tired and that's the way it is."
Averaging 25 shots on goal in each of their games, the 'Balers mustered only 10 against the Acorns.
"You can dominate 99 percent of the time," Alvarez said. "But if you take only 10 shots, guaranteed only one will go in."
Yaira Lizarrage scored in the opening five minutes for San Benito (6-1-1), and Diaz's first goal tied the game at one going into the break. The 'Balers had their chances late in the contest to tie it, including a wide-open shot in the waning minutes, but couldn't capitalize.
"We were able to score some goals -- that's the important thing," Vasquez said. "Hopefully, we won't overlook teams in the future and not come out like we did Monday."
