Rams still looking for league victory
Oct 13, 2008
- Staff Reports

Gavilan men's soccer fell to 0-4 in conference play
GILROY -- It's sometimes difficult to understand, but even winning comes with a learning curve.

Gavilan College fell 2-1 to Chabot College last Friday in Gilroy, and although the Rams remain without a victory in the Coast Conference, coach Albert Marques noticed a positive attitude amongst his players afterward -- almost as if they emerged victorious.

"We were really down after Foothill," said Marques, whose men's soccer squad lost 7-0 to the college from Los Altos Hills last Tuesday.

"But after Chabot, with the way we played, we got a lot of confidence back," Marques added. "We learned that we definitely can compete at this level.

"Their sprits are good."

The Rams, with 16 freshmen on a 19-man roster, are 0-4 in the Coast Conference, 4-6 overall. But Marques said his team, from the last 10 minutes of the first half through the entire second stanza, dominated the contest.

Gavilan had its chances, hitting the post four different times in the game.

Chabot grabbed a 1-0 lead 20 minutes into the first half, and took the one-goal cushion to the break. The Rams managed to control the pitch for the remainder of the game, and although Chabot held a 2-0 lead at one point, Gavilan cut the deficit in half when sophomore Carlos Zepeda netted the team's lone goal 30 minutes into the second half.

With their confidence back from their decisive loss at Foothill, the Rams now need to start finishing.

"We were just driving and driving, but we just couldn't put it in," Marques said. "We had lots of opportunities, just driving, but just couldn't put it in."

Last Tuesday, Gavilan dropped a 7-0 decision on the road against Foothill College. The Rams trailed 3-0 at halftime and 2-0 after the first five minutes.

Gavilan will play Canada College today at 4 p.m. in Redwood City.
