MORGAN HILL -- An upset over Mount Pleasant was not in the cards for Live Oak on Thursday, but the Lady Acorns' best finish in several years still might be.

On a windy Senior Day at Live Oak High School, the Acorns lost 5-2 to the first-place Cardinals, getting singles victories by Kalea Cleeton and Marie Lewis. Live Oak fell to 7-7 overall and 6-6 in Blossom Valley Athletic League-Santa Teresa Division play.

Heading into the final week of league competition, the Acorns can clinch their first .500 record in some time with a victory against Branham or Prospect.

"We are looking forward to finishing the season strong," Live Oak coach Mark Cummins said in a statement.

Cleeton took the top singles game in two sets, beating Angela Zaccheo 6-2, 6-1; and Lewis surrendered three games in besting Samantha Vu 6-3, 6-0.

"Kalea and Marie played outstanding matches, beating the opponent who had beat them earlier in the year," Cummins said.

Mount Pleasant (11-1 BVAL) salvaged a singles split with victories by Kimberly Chan (6-1, 6-0) and Jenny Mai (6-4, 6-4) over Alyssa Gamboa and Elena McElheny, respectively.

The Cardinals kept pace in doubles play with three hard-fought victories.

Samantha Ochoa and Anita Sisombath defeated Live Oak's Charissa Hosseini and Jennifer Protsman in three sets 4-6, 6-2, 6-2; Shelly Wong and Ashley Roth downed Mika Matsumoto and Melrose Ecura 7-6, 6-2; and Sonia Beri and Tran Nguyen beat Megan Shumate and Amy Freitas 7-6, 6-3.

"All of our doubles teams' matches were very competitive and could have gone either way," Cummins added.

The Acorns travel to Branham today and Prospect on Thursday. Both games start at 3:15 p.m.
