Live Oak tennis hosts first- and second-place teams next week.
MORGAN HILL -- Make it six wins in a row -- Live Oak girl's tennis did so Thursday against Yerba Buena.

With another perfect singles day, and a three-set doubles win by Charissa Hosseini and Jennifer Protsman, the Lady Acorns downed the Aztec Warriors 5-2 at Live Oak High School.

Live Oak, which fell to Yerba Buena 4-3 earlier in the season, improved to 6-4 in the Blossom Valley Athletic League Santa Teresa Division heading into a challenging week. The Acorns face second-place Independence on Tuesday, then host division front-runner Mount Pleasant for Senior Day on Thursday. Both games start at 3:15 p.m.

In between, the Acorns travel to Hollister on Wednesday for a nonleague game at 3:30.

"All players are playing with a lot of confidence and are looking forward to next week when we take on the two top teams in the league," Live Oak coach Mark Cummins said in a statement.

The Acorn singles built off of gritty victories by Kalea Cleeton and Alyssa Gamboa, who defeated Stephany Young (6-4, 4-6, 6-2) and Jenny Huynh (3-6, 6-4, 6-0) in three sets, respectively.

Live Oak's Marie Lewis followed with a win over Jenny Ngo 6-3, 6-2, and Elena McElheny completed the singles sweep with a two-set downing of Vanessa Duong 6-1, 6-4.

"The singles players are really stepping up their game," Cummins said. "Their hard work is paying off. Kalea and Alyssa both dominated in the third set."

Hosseini and Protsman clinched the victory in the top doubles game, rallying past Kate Pham and Christina Ngo 3-6, 6-0, 6-2.

"Charissa and Jennifer got off to a slow start but really played well after the first set," Cummins added. "They were a determined pair."

The Aztec Warriors took the final two doubles games, as Annie Ngo and Jennifer Nguyen defeated Mika Matsumoto and Alex Mandel in three sets 6-3, 4-6, 6-4; and Yen Bui and Helen Dao beat Melrose Ecura and Megan Shumate 6-3, 6-4.

The Lady Acorns finished 3-1 with victories against Soquel (9-8 OT), Gunn (10-5) and James Logan (13-4). Live Oak's lone defeat came against tournament host Aptos, 11-9.
