The Junior Midget-level Morgan Hill Raiders kicked off their annual football jamboree in a preseason game against the Hollister Vikings last weekend.
In a tough defensive battle that went scoreless through the first two quarters, the host Vikings - a Division I team - prevailed for a 16-6 victory over the Division II Raiders.
Morgan Hill still held the edge in yards of total offense. The Raiders threatened to score in the second quarter after Drew Glines hooked up with Trevor Beardon for a 67-yard completion. The Vikings turned them away, though, at their own 10-yard line.
Hollister went ahead 8-0 in the third quarter with a touchdown and two-point PAT following a Morgan Hill fumble.
The Raiders answered quickly with a 5-yard touchdown run by Glines, cutting the lead to 8-6. They were unable to score again.
Hollister added an insurance touchdown and PAT in the fourth quarter.
