The field takes off at the start of Saturday's 33rd Annual 12-kilometer Mount Madonna Challenge at the Sprig Lake Picnic Area. South Valley's only trail race, which also featured a six-kilometer run, drew more than 100 people.
Even after 33 years, South Valley's only trail race hasn't lost its appeal.
More than 100 runners from across California showed up Saturday at Sprig Lake for the 12-kilometer Mount Madonna Challenge and six-kilometer Salamander Run & Walk.
The event was presented by the South Valley Running Club and, as usual, was welcomed with pristine weather.
"It was a big hit once again," South Valley Running Club president Allan Abrams said. "The course was beautiful - people just loved it. It's one of the most beautiful trail courses in the area."
San Jose's Toshikazu Hosaka won the 12K in 52:45 seconds, while Erika Kikuchi of Sunnyvale captured the women's title in 1:09:03.
