Even after 33 years, South Valley's only trail race hasn't lost its appeal.

More than 100 runners from across California showed up Saturday at Sprig Lake for the 12-kilometer Mount Madonna Challenge and six-kilometer Salamander Run & Walk.

The event was presented by the South Valley Running Club and, as usual, was welcomed with pristine weather.

"It was a big hit once again," South Valley Running Club president Allan Abrams said. "The course was beautiful - people just loved it. It's one of the most beautiful trail courses in the area."

San Jose's Toshikazu Hosaka won the 12K in 52:45 seconds, while Erika Kikuchi of Sunnyvale captured the women's title in 1:09:03. Morgan Hill's Julianne Whitelaw (1:11:27) and Amy Fogerson (1:28:33) placed second in the 30-39 and 19-29 divisions, respectively, and Yvonne Duckett (2:08:10) took third in the 50-59 group.
