Driving with balance
Aug 4, 2008
By Don DeLorenzo - Special to the Times

If you're off balance in anything you do, you can't expect great results. Driving the golf ball is certainly no exception. A balanced swing will most certainly result in a much better shot.

The proper balance for a golf swing changes depending on the shot. If you are hitting the ball off the tee with your driver, the proper balance would require having your weight slightly behind the ball, but driving through it.

The proper balance when hitting an iron shot off the ground is that your weight is already mostly on your front foot, and you are driving down with your knees bent. It is important that you distinguish between these two shots.

Hitting an iron with your weight behind the ball will result in a lot of topped and fat shots. Hitting a driver with your weight already in front of the ball will cause you to smother it or pop it straight up in the air.
