The South Bay Swim League Championships, one of the state's oldest and most prestigious meets, is making its Morgan Hill Aquatics Center debut this weekend.
In light of scheduling conflicts at Independence High School - site of the past three League Championships - the six-team, 700-person meet was relocated to the Aquatics Center, where it will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Clubs competing include Almaden Swim and Racquet Club, Mission San Jose Aquatics, Milpitas Tidal Waves, San Jose Aquatics, Valley Splash and West Coast Aquatics.
The change of venue came with heavy recommendation from Almaden Swim and Racquet Club.
"We suggested moving it to Morgan Hill because it's one of the fastest pools in the Pacific Swimming League, which is most of Northern California and parts of Nevada," Almaden Swim and Racquet Club committee chairman Mark Scannell said in a telephone interview Wednesday. "The Aquatics Center offers all the facilities required for big meets."
Opened in June 2004, the Morgan Hill Aquatics Center also will host the Far Western Championships next spring.
"This weekend will be a good trial run for it," Scannell added.
