The Run for the Stinkin' Roses, the popular South Valley Running Club-hosted event that raised more than $5,000 in charitable funds a year ago, is making a second lap.

Formerly called the Reek Run, the Run for the Stinkin' Roses starts at 8 a.m. Saturday, July 12 at Solorsano Middle School. Last year, it attracted a sizable crowd in its first running.

The Morgan Hill-based South Valley Running Club changed the name of the race after taking over management of the Reek Run in January 2007.

"It was a fantastic turnout," race director and South Valley Running Club President Allan Abrams recalled. "We got some great comments from the runners.

"It was a new course last year. People really were very positive about it and how it was conducted. Everything went surprisingly well."

The Run for the Stinkin' Roses is sponsored by Saint Louise Regional Hospital, Massage Envy, AJM Laser & Aesthetic Center, Naked Juice, New Balance, Robeks, Go Run Sports and Team in Training. It consists of a 10K race and 5K fun run/walk. The 5K course is a flat, out-and-back bike trail, while the 10K is a one-hill loop course running from scenic Santa Teresa Boulevard to Thomas Road, to a bike trail near Princevalle Street, then back to Santa Teresa. As an added bonus, the 10K is a USA Track and Field-certified rout.

"It basically means if a runner were to set a record on this course, it could stand as a U.S. official time record," Abrams said. "If it's not certified, you can't claim anything. This is like an official race."

The $30 entry fee is part of a large portion of proceeds going toward the Friends of San Martin Animal Shelter. Interested runners can register online at www.active.com or print an application from the South Valley Running Club Web site, www.svrchome.org. They also can register the day of the race starting at 7 a.m.

Abrams added that this year's enrollment already is close to 100 people, one-third of last year's total.

"We're expecting a big crowd again," he said.
