Sobrato clinches first title with help

May 9, 2008
- Staff Reports

History came a game earlier than expected for Sobrato courtesy of Del Mar.

The Bulldogs are guaranteed to at least tie for first place in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League after Del Mar's 4-3 upset of Prospect and Sobrato's 12-7 rout Lincoln on Wednesday. The division title is a program first for Sobrato, moved a game ahead of Prospect heading into today's regular-season finale at 3:30 p.m. in Morgan Hill.

The Bulldogs still have much to play for. If Prospect wins, the Panthers will take the season series thus holding a tie-breaker over the Bulldogs (22-7 overall, 17-3 BVAL) for position in the CIF-Central Coast Section playoffs. Both teams secured their postseason berths last week - also a program first for Sobrato.

The Bulldogs showered host Lincoln with 14 hits - several giving away to a three-run first inning. The Lions (14-8, 12-8) countered with two runs in the second to tie it at 3-all, but Sobrato pulled away with five more in the third and four in the fifth.

Bulldogs' starting pitcher Billy Birrell completed a perfect 8-0 regular season, striking out five batters and surrendering three runs on three hits in five innings.

Offensively, Sobrato got three hits from as many batters. Danny Nelson, Kevin Sullivan and Ryan Williams each went 3 for 5, with Sullivan finishing a triple shy of hitting for the cycle. Sullivan homered, doubled and singled on the way to amassing five RBIs and three runs.

Birrell also crossed home three times while teammates Deric Horon and Tom Buich had two hits, and Rauley Cambra two RBIs.
