LO girls lead local track teams in divisional
May 9, 2008 - Staff Reports The track and field teams from Live Oak and Sobrato each held their ground at last week's Santa Teresa Division Finals, setting a strong precedent for today's Blossom Valley Athletic League championships at Mount Pleasant High School.
The Live Oak girls contingent made the strongest showing, finishing second place behind division champion Leland.
"The girls performed as expected and maybe even more so," Live Oak coach Dean Raymond said in a statement. "... A number of these athletes are underclassmen and are still learning how to compete at a championship level."
The Lady Acorns, whose only dual meet loss came against the Chargers this year, came away with four individual titles, including an opening win by Erika Rodriguez, Lauren Drewniany, Courtney Robinson and Catherine Sparling in the 4x100-meter relay. The foursome clocked a season-best time of 51.97 seconds.
Also taking first was teammate Pauline Olsen, who won the 400-meter run in 1:00.03.
Live Oak's Stephanie Armstrong, who had been injured for most of the season, leapt to first in the high jump, clearing four feet, 10 inches.
The Acorns' Kaleigh Mallette collected a division title in pole vault, launching to eight feet even.
Live Oak's boys team battled to sixth place with the help of respective wins by Nic Muhn and Eric Tolsen in the 300-meter hurdles and pole vault.
Muhn, who placed fifth in his preliminary heat, churned in a personal-best time in the finals. The senior finished in 40.67.
Tolsen, a sophomore, completed a Live Oak sweep in pole vault, launching to 10-06.
The Acorns quailfied 21 athletes for the BVAL finals, a testament to the dedication of the team, Raymond said.
With the help of Lance Wolfsmith's three individual titles, Sobrato's boys team placed third in the Santa Teresa finals.
The gentlemen Bulldogs finished two points less than second-place Independence.
Wolfsmith, a junior, was Sobrato's lone champion, winning the 800 meters in 2:00.11, 1,600 meters in 4:36.74 and 3,200 meters in 9:56.29 - a rare trifecta.
Alan Rios added a third-place finish in the 1,600 meters (4:42.60) for the Bulldogs, as did Alex Meldrum in the 300 hurdles (40.72).
Sobrato's girls contingent also took third in the division.
The Lady Bulldogs sacked two individual titles and came close to several more. Junior Arial Mosbrucker and freshman Marissa Benjamin highlighted the effort with victories in the triple jump and 200-meter dash, respectively.
Mosbrucker leapt 35-02 while Benjamin clocked 27.32.
Sobrato's Kristi Whitmyre 5:21.84) and Abhilasha Devaraj (5:24.84) ran to third and fourth place in the 1,600 meters, and Mosbrucker took second in high jump (4-10) and third in long jump (16-04).
Devaraj also finished third in the 3,200 meters (12:00.54)
