Gavilan: Rams smash LMC in baseball
Feb 15, 2008
By Nathan Mixter - Staff Writer

Gavilan took advantage of 11 errors and 19 hits to hammer visiting Los Meda'os College 17-9 Tuesday afternoon.

"It's fun to take it to somebody, but at the same time you can't rest on that. You're not going to score 17 runs every game," said Gavilan coach Neal Andrade. "It's not going to be like this in conference.

"We still have some things to shore up with our pitching and defense, but we have been swinging the bat pretty good and scoring some runs."

Los Meda'os entered the game having played three tournament games over the weekend.

Gilroy High grad Tyler Osborne capped Tuesday's rout with a three-run, two-out home run in the eighth inning.

"He had a good year last year," Andrade said. "We're expecting him to be cleanup or in the middle of the order this year. He's a guy we expect to not necessarily be a home run hitter but to drive in runs."

Alex Oberle picked up the win for the Rams, who are now 3-3-1 this season.

The defensive highlight of the game was turned in by left fielder Jacob Boyd in the ninth inning. Boyd tracked down a high fly ball at the fence and made a leaping catch to take the hit away.

The offensive leaders for Gavilan were Drew Andersen (4-6), Jorden Newton (3-5), Kevin Medeiros (3-6), Osborne (3-5) and Travis Ross (2-5).

Gavilan will facing visiting Barstow on Saturday in a doubleheader at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. and again on Sunday at 11 a.m.

SOFTBALL

Gavilan rallies to win

The Gavilan softball team started off slow but still defeated visiting Monterey Peninsula 5-2 in the Coast Conference opener Tuesday.

"I think we learned a lesson about the tempo of the game," said coach Nikki Dequin-Thompson. "We changed the intensity and turned the game around.

"We should come out strong right from the start on Thursday."

The Rams (6-1, 1-0) will face Cabrillo at home Thursday.

Dani Hernandez received the win, and Amanda Rosevear handled the catching duties.

Hernandez stuck out 6, walked 1 and gave up 2 runs on 4 hits.

Monterey Peninsula College scored both its runs in the third inning.

Ashley Rappa got on by fielders choice, Shiloh Cabatingan had a base hit and Renee Halcon hit a double to score the two.

For Gavilan, leadoff hitter Julie Broyer got the Rams going offensively. She had 2 hits, 2 stolen bases and scored 2 runs.

Danielle Scibuola also got hot at the plate. She had 2 RBIs, 2 hits (one a double) and 2 stolen bases.

Other offensive highlights for the Rams included Alicia Reese with a double, Audra Brown with a 2-RBI single and Amanda Rosevear with two hits and a stolen base.
