Gavilan updates: Rams fall in overtime to Mont. Peninsula
Feb 8, 2008
By Nathan Mixter - Staff Writer

Gavilan has a flare for the dramatic when it plays Monterey Peninsula.

After winning in double overtime earlier this season, the Rams lost 81-79 in overtime to MPC on Wednesday night.

Gavilan, who has had to scratch and claw for its eight wins, is averaging slightly more than five points more than its opponents in those games. But the Rams have battled Monterey Peninsula (15-12, 5-3) tough this season.

Gavilan's John Williams hit his second free throw with 3.2 seconds left to tie the game at 72, but the Rams (8-20, 2-6 conf.) couldn't pull it out in overtime.

The Rams held the advantage for most of the game, matching MPC's points with their own until late when the Lobos went on a 13-1 run. Gavilan held a 36-27 lead at halftime after Williams hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer and led by as much as 12 when Williams hit another clutch 3-pointer with 10:30 left.

MPC took the lead with 2:20 left, and the lead changed hands seven times in the final minutes of regulation.

The highlight of the game for the Rams was an alley-oop dunk by Jessie LoBue on a pass from Vince Bautista in the first half.

Gavilan will be at West Valley on Friday to continue Coast Conference play.

Lady Rams sweep twin bill with West Hills

Gavilan recorded another doubleheader win Tuesday in Coalinga. The Rams (5-1) defeated West Hills 7-0 and 7-5.

Gavilan pitcher Danielle Hernandez went the distance in game one, striking out nine and scattering four hits.

Hernandez got plenty of help with three RBIs from Mikhaela Osuna and two more from Audra Brown, who had three hits and one stolen base.

Brown, Osuna, Danielle Scibuola, Alicia Reese and Julie Broyer each had multiple hits for the Rams.

Gavilan jumped ahead early in the second game with the help of four RBIs from Osuna and two more from Scibuola. Osuna had two sacrifice flies, and Scibuola singled and doubled.

Broyer got the win after pitching five strong innings until giving up three runs in the sixth. She helped her cause with a solid afternoon at the plate, finishing a home run shy of hitting for the cycle. Broyer had an RBI and one stolen base.

Hernandez worked a hitless seventh inning for the save.

Cristine Vasquez doubled twice for Gavilan, which hosts Monterey Peninsula on Tuesday.
