The Hollister Rotary Club's Mission 10 Run will turn 25 Jan. 26 and more than 400 South County runners will head down to San Juan Bautista to participate in one of three races.
Joggers and runners will strut along the rural and scenic 10-mile course or the 5K route which can be walked while children 12 and under can compete in the Elliot Swank Memorial one-mile run.
The race is a favorite for athletes in the area, according to race director Bill Tiffany.
"For serious runners, the 10-mile distance is a good race," Tiffany said. "The race is relatively small and the returning participants enjoy the rural environment. But the relatively small manner in which we operate the race is what gives us the positive feedback."
Tiffany, who has been in charge of the run for more than a decade, said that proceeds will go to the Rotary's scholarship fund.
The club has earmarked one scholarship already for a deserving student at Anzar High School in San Juan Bautista.
The 10 miler will start and end at the historic Mission San Jan Bautista and will run through scenic farm land and up into the Anzar Hills.
Last year, the run attracted 407 participants while CArlos A. Segueiro of San Jose won the 10-mile race for the third year in a row.
Runners who finish in the top three of eight different age divisions will receive medals for their accomplishments.
Last year, four Morgan Hill residents won medals.
Tiffany, who has been a Rotary member for more than 20 years, said that the event also aims at drawing families out to San Juan Bautista to enjoy the town's amentities.
"There are a lot of good things to do after the race," Tiffany said. "There are quite a few lunch spots. We are trying to get more families to participate. If they look at it as a whole day event, it will attract families and increase participation."
