Hands in the Holster
Sep 18, 2007
By Don DeLorenzo - Staff Writer

One of the keys to hitting crisp iron shots off the fairway is proper hand position.

Where should your hands be in relationship to the ball at impact? In all cases, your hands should be over the ball or slightly in front of the ball.

The difference depends on what club you are using. The shorter the iron, the more your hands should be in front of the ball. This is due partly to the fact that the ball position is more in the center of your stance so your hands will be naturally further ahead.

With longer irons, your hands will be only slightly ahead of the ball. This is once again due to the fact that the ball position with those clubs is further forward in your stance (closer to the left foot).

In all instances, the shaft of the club should point at the inside of your left hip during your setup and at impact.

How far ahead of the ball depends on the ball position. If you strike the ball with your hands ahead and the club head traveling slightly on the downward arc, you will hit crisp iron shots. Remember, never have your hands behind the ball when trying to hit an iron.
