One of the main differences between an experienced player and a beginner is the ability for the veteran player to adjust the length of his swing for the conditions and the shot length.
As an example, when playing into the wind, just taking more club doesn't always accomplish more distance. Going form a 9 iron to a 7 iron often still hits the ball in the air too high where it can be effected by the breeze.
Take a lower lofted club such as a 6 or 5 and swing shorter. This accomplishes two things. It keeps the ball lower "under" the wind and the shorter swing makes it travel shorter so the distance is correct.
Many of us fall prey to hitting irons too hard. When faced with an option of being "between" clubs, choose the longer club and swing shorter and under control.
Golf has always been a game of precision over power. You can lower your score if you keep that on your mind and don't try to overpower the course.
