Around the Water Cooler: Democrats controlling Congress
THIS WEEK'S QUESTION:
"Has the Obama Administration done enough to help Democrats retain control of Congress?""
■ Dave Appling: "Not so far. 'For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?' (1 Cor 14:8).
■ Bert Berson: "No. They have not effectively fought right-wing distortions and propaganda."
■ Chris Bryant: "Yes, although I'd say he's doing too much and not paying enough attention to the job he was elected to do."
■ Bob Chidester: "No. It would help if Obama would stick to the issues of running the country like providing for the common defense. The only thing he is good at is reading a teleprompter and raising money."
■ Dennis Kennedy: "He's done a lot, but turning the economy around is not within any one person's power. It's the economy and jobs which will have the greatest impact on voter decisions."
■ Julian Mancias: "Yes. But barely. President Obama needs to take a firm stance on immigration and hope that the economy improves between now and Nov. 2."
■ Henry Miller: "Probably not. As is the case with most incumbents at the time of mid-term elections, the problems, no matter whose fault, are what the electorate concentrates on."
■ Lisa Pampuch: "Yes. The Obama Administration and the Democratic Congress averted another great depression, rescued the auto industry, and passed much-needed healthcare reform, for starters. Democrats need to tout those major accomplishments and, in cases where they're lucky enough to be running against tea party extremists, highlight the positions of their opponents that would lead to things like another great depression, even higher unemployment, no abortion even in the case of rape and incest, no social safety net and a failed Social Security system."
■ Jeff Smith: "That's a funny question, because it's very clear that Obama has done more than enough stupid things to help Democrats lose control of Congress."
■ Steve Staloch: "No. Presidential leadership shouldn't be about back slapping, canned stump speeches or kissing babies - or anything else - for your party's candidates on the campaign trail. If Obama wants to see his party prevail in November, he should demonstrate a new breed of party leadership by focusing on solving the critical problems facing this nation and leave the folly of campaign proms and empty bumper sticker promises to the political hacks.""
