Water shortage? No worries, I’ve got this

Not enough rain. Too much rain. Can we ever be satisfied? Well, folks, today let’s talk a little about water. But not a little bit of water. A whole bunch of water. Oops. Excuse me for a minute. Seems every time I think or talk about water, well, you know.

Music and comedy on my mind
Posted: February 28, 2014

Sometimes, I have difficulty deciding which I like better, comedy or great music. Each has, in its own way, a magical capability to improve my mood and state of mind. A couple of days ago, I was listening to a symphony, Mussorgsky-Ravel’s Pictures at an Exhibition, on my ancient but superb sounding stereo system. My mind was totally consumed with the power and majesty of composition. I closed my eyes and let the notes take me through the Great Gates of Kiev, totally engrossed. I probably was a Russian Cossack in a past life. If you asked me at that moment, I would have told you that music was my favorite and most enjoyable pastime.

“Who is Ringo Starr?’ … can you imagine?

Now that the holidays are behind us, things have been somewhat quiet and peaceful at the Miller household. The arrival of our granddaughter to live with us has been a joy. Now I have a chance to tell someone my stories, the ones that Lady M says, “If you tell me that story one more time, I’ll.... " - I usually don’t hear the end of that reminder.

A few years ago, while taking a hiatus from my law practice, I spent some time working as a substitute teacher in our district.

Well, well … as I write the skies rain down heavy. That’s going to keep the hills grassy green for quite some time. You just never know what Ma Nature has in store. And that’s why it’s tough to be a farmer.

No sooner did South County finally get out of the news as a hotbed of bigotry – after the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors approved a much-protested proposal for a Muslim worship center in San Martin moved that story out of the spotlight – than we landed right back in the same predicament, thanks to Blake Lebeck.

Ask yourself what the path we’re on leaves for our grandchildren

Charles Dickens began his “Tale of Two Cities” by reflecting that “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times”. He writes of that past and offers only comparisons to his own time.

Our community does value our youth
Updated: May 24, 2012 - 4:46 pm

In January of 2011, I shared data from the Search Institute indicating that 35 percent of 4th to 6th graders in Santa Clara County felt the adults in their communities valued children and youth and only 18 percent of our middle and high school students felt valued by the adults in their communities. I urged community members, “let’s ask ourselves what we can do to build positive relationships with our youth.” I am very happy to report that many of our community members and organizations have answered the call.
