Around the Water Cooler: Good idea to modify military tribunals?
May 21, 2009
 By The Community

THIS WEEK'S QUESTION:

"Do you support Pres. Barack Obama's decision to modify former Pres. George Bush's military tribunals for Guantanamo Bay detainees?"

Yes: 7
No: 3

■ Karen Anderson: "Yes. He is addressing the safety concerns of citizens over having the detainees in the U.S. proper, at the same time giving the detainees more civil rights in defending themselves."

■ Bert Berson: "Yes. I want to see details, particularly what rights are denied."

■ David Cohen: "Yes. While disappointed in the reversal of his earlier pledge, this goes in the right direction of providing a legal forum for those incarcerated, and helping restore our nation's global reputation as a pillar of human rights."

■ Dennis Kennedy: "No! I would rather see them tried by a U.S. (non-military) or international court of law. These are international terrorist criminals and should be tried as such."

■ Julian Mancias: "Yes. Sort of. I agree that it seems like 'Bush Lite' but it does maintain two key ingredients: 1, all but 13 detainees will be transferred out and 2, Guantanamo Bay is scheduled to close in January 2010."

■ Linda McNulrty: "Yes, it's his job now." n Henry Miller: "Yes! I feel that the U.S. Guantanamo policy, although attributed to former President Bush, is covered with the finger prints of former Vice President Cheney and former Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld. The further we get away from the influence of these two despots, the better we all will be."

■ Lisa Pampuch: "No. Although Obama's proposal for military tribunals is better than Bush's, it falls short of his campaign promises and fails to meet American standards of justice. 'Bush light' tribunals aren't good enough."

■ John Quick: "I feel that it is a move in the right direction. Many of the detainees have been determined to be innocent, but there are undoubtedly guilty among them. Sorting this out in a fair way is long overdue. At least Obama is starting the process."

■ Emily Shem-Tov: "The modifications do seem to ease some of the worst aspects of the tribunals but they still fail to restore the credibility of the failed system and it is disappointing to see a return to it."
