Vote for congressional, state and open space authority incumbents
Sep 22, 2008
Re-elect Jerry McNerney - 11th Congressional District
Since being elected to the 11th California Congressional District in the fall of 2006, Jerry McNerney has demonstrated an ability to work with fellow Congress people, even Republicans, to create a sound energy policy to help our country increase oil production and remain environmentally sound. The former wind energy engineer hasn't disappointed voters. He went to Washington to do what he said he was going to do: help solve the nation's energy problems. He's helped Congress pass several bills that are doing just that. He needs to continue to explore ways for Congress to become less partisan and find ways to lower gas prices, and address our long-term energy needs. We think he's the man to do it. He's also helped Morgan Hill make progress on securing funds for the Llagas Creek Flood Protection Project working with Santa Clara Valley Water District officials and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The project will provide flood protection to 1,100 homes, 500 business and more than 1,300 acres of agricultural land in South County. Stalled for 54 years and only 60 percent complete, McNerney is moving it forward. We're also grateful that McNerney hasn't forgotten about Morgan Hill. His Congress at your Corner events and telephone town hall meetings are valuable tools to meet with constituents and hear their concerns. Also this past May, he began pushing for a federal drinking water safety standard for perchlorate. Vote for McNerney on Nov. 4.
Re-elect Mike Honda - 15th Congressional District
Since being elected to the United States House of Representatives in 2000, Congressman Mike Honda has impressed us with his ability to tackle difficult issues without raising the political ire of his colleagues. Such was the case when he asked for an investigation surrounding the death of Pat Tillman by friendly fire in Afghanistan. Such moves have shown courage and a willingness to stand up for what's right and we admire that quality in Honda and hope he continues to set the example in Washington. He's facing Republican candidate Joyce Cordi and Green candidate Peter Myers in the upcoming election. Honda serves on several powerful congressional committees and has the right connections to get the job done. Vote for Honda on Nov. 4.
Re-elect Alex Kennett - Open Space Authority District 1
In the wake of the California Supreme Court striking down the Santa Clara County Open Space Authority property assessment fee, which will now make the agency return $50 million to property owners, it's more important than ever that we re-elect incumbent Alex Kennett to the agency's District 1 seat. Kennett will work with the rest of the authority's board members, all of whom are endorsing him, to find ways to continue to purchase lands for the public's best interest. Kennett has many ideas on how to raise revenue for such purposes without having to rely on taxes. Under Kennett's leadership, the authority has worked cooperatively with several agencies to purchase the majority of the beautiful Blair Ranch and Rancho Canada del Oro Open Space Preserve just west of Morgan Hill. Those decisions have protected key portions of the Uvas and Llagas watersheds. Under his tenure the authority has preserved other ranch lands, provided opportunities for public access and created programs that encourage young people to get out and enjoy their natural world. Re-elect Alex Kennett for the OSA's District 1 seat this Nov. 4.
Re-elect Abel Maldonado - Senate District 15
In the race for state Senate District 15 the choice is between Republican incumbent Sen. Abel Maldonado and independent Jim Fitzgerald, a UPS account manager from Nipomo. Maldonado was elected in 2004 to the Senate by a narrow margin. We urge voters to return him to the Senate as he's shown he's one of few lawmakers in Sacramento who's willing to cross party lines to get things done, including fixing our state budget mess.
