Letters: Bullet train will be a money loser
Bullet train will be a money loser
Dear Editor,
Bullet trains coming to town: according to the latest from bullet train promoters, one northbound every 15 minutes, and one southbound during the same 15 minutes. And making a profit? Don't think about all those airlines filing for bankruptcy protection (four in the last 10 days) because bullet train will be different. Yes, it will be different: it will have mostly empty seats just like the VTA buses in town, running at 99 percent taxpayers' dollars.

Loud protest only way to stop terrible government budget cuts
Dear Editor,
Bay Area protesters gathered to stop the Olympic torch from being passed off in San Francisco this week, my response to this is, why can't we get this much support and media attention during a time of budget cuts that will greatly affect everyone in this state?
Reading articles throughout the month about Morgan Hill Unified School District cutting more than 30 positions, state parks closing down, 10 percent cuts in social services and mental health programs ... where are all the protesters?
As a community we must understand what's going to hit us. Less funding equals less opportunity and access to programs for those that need it the most, quality of care and education will decrease and safety can be jeopardized.
For child welfare and related services $433.1 million will be cut. For state education $4.6 billion will be cut. This budget affects everyone and we need to act! If you are in a union, contact them. Talk to organizations (churches, clubs, teams, groups) that you're a part of that would be willing to lobby. Write letters to government officials. I hope that we can rally together like the protesters because that is exactly the type of mentality we need to get our voices heard.

Congratulations for wine auction
Dear Editor,
It's been truly amazing to see the incredible efforts put forward by the volunteers that have brought the South Valley Wine Auction together again.
The auction has been the premier fund raising event in Morgan Hill for nine years, and last Friday it was its tenth year, raising thousands of funds for track and field and cross country and now, this year, all sports programs in the Morgan Hill Unified School District.
The Wine Auction was nearly canceled this year, but thanks to the efforts of many, it is happening again. Volunteers, like coaches Dennis Martin, Dean Raymond, volunteers Don and Donna Mott, Paula Mancias,The Morgan Hill Athletic Foundation, The Live Oak and Sobrato Athletic Boosters with volunteers Mitch Baio, Matt Legunas, Paula Mancias, Eva Serna, Cindy Armstrong, KBAY's Jona Denz-Hamilton, Sharon Stoner, Cindy Short, Andrea Pasek, Joanne Henderson, Raman Devera and the many students and other volunteers who helped with set up and clean up, all working together for the benefit of our youth. What a great team effort.
Congratulations all for pulling off another great event.
Dennis Kennedy, Morgan Hill
Thank you for a wonderful hike up El Toro mountain
Dear Editor,
This year's hike up El Toro sponsored by the Morgan Hill Historical Society was an unprecedented success. We had more than 600 hikers reach the top.
The Morgan Hill Historical Society Board would like to recognize and thank the following people for their help in making this year's hike such a success:
Bob and Gysella Rich for opening their private road and allowing the hikers to access El Toro.
Phil Peterson and Boy Scout Troop 799 for stringing ropes and helping Teal Peterson and his Marine buddies carve out steps to make reaching the top easier. The troop's tireless efforts year after year are what make this hike possible.
Peter Anderson, our resident geologist, for his most informative talk as to how El Toro rose up in Morgan Hill.
Roseanne Macek, our Morgan Hill community librarian, for opening up the Morgan Hill Library entrance and restrooms for the participants.
Roger and Janie Knopf for helping with the set up and tear down.
Wayne Conroy from Make It Mine for his special consideration in the printing of our T-shirts.
And last but not least our wonderful community of hikers who were patient with the traffic jam on the slope and still managed to have fun making it to the top.
We are looking forward to next year's hike and you will all be glad to know that due to the numbers we are going back to two starting times.
Thank you Morgan Hill for being such a great community!
Jennifer Tate, Board President
Ellie Weston, El Toro Hike Chairperson
