Dinner-dance benefits Dayworker Center
Mar 1, 2005
- Special to the Times

Dear Editor:

As Paul Swing's Techcon volunteer crew is putting the finishing touches on the parking lot of the Dayworker Center, we would like to express thanks and recount the last two years of volunteerism and community spirit displayed by the people in the South Valley area, especially in Morgan Hill.

It was over two years ago when Charles Weston of Weston-Miles Architects purchased the land on Depot Street and worked with Gilroy School District for the donation of two old portable classrooms. Charles then signed a lease agreement with the Dayworker Committee of St. Catherine's Church for $1 per month rent. Charles also worked with Bill McClintock of MH Engineering for needed site improvement and engineering calculations.

The move finally started in late 2003. Scott Schilling of South Valley Developers motivated Bejarano Electric, Quality Plumbing and Trinchero Construction to run the underground wiring and plumbing from the street to the building at no cost. Chris Hauge from West Hills Community Church used a City of Morgan Hill Community Development Block Grant to move the building from Gilroy to Morgan Hill. Dick Oliver and Rod Martin of Dividend Homes came to the property and eventually donated money for lumber and doors.

The building is wired with a DSL line volunteered by Steve Dudek of E-Wire Solutions. Some of you may have seen his project on "Extreme Makeover" for a family of seven orphan children. Bob Gomez, our beloved retired police sergeant, has been volunteering with Ced Morgan to make the bathroom handicap-accessible. He also worked with Tom Lopez of Day & Nite Towing to put in the water heater. Bob and Chris both spent many days to help coordinate the work.

This project is the result of so many volunteers' efforts that almost all jobs were done by great people, either free of charge or at a huge discount. People such as Jim at Jet Electric, Dave Delmue at Danny Fence, Kevin at K.C. Heating, Mike Johnson at Johnson Ace Hardware, Associated Concrete, Rich Heiser, Dave Sornberger, Jim Schipsi and all the fine people from Trinchero Construction, etc., etc. We hope we did not miss any. We want to salute all of these wonderful people and thank them for their generous hearts. Also, special thanks to Tony Eulo, Ed Tewes, Garrett Toy, City Council members and other city staff members.

This coming Saturday is our Mardi Gras dinner-dance fundraiser at 5:30pm at St. Catherine's Parish. We want to take this opportunity to announce to the world that we are ready to open the doors at the Dayworker Center. We also would hope to see a lot of you join all the above-mentioned people in celebrating the community spirit of Morgan Hill and come dance with us.

Hedy Chang, Julian Mancias,

America Romero, Chris Hauge
