“Red Phone, some time ago, Peet Avenue was repaved. Where they stopped at Avenida de los Padres, the pavement didn’t match and a temporary sign was set up identifying the uneven pavement. Now the sign is weathered, tagged and often on the ground, while a considerable drop remains. What is going on there? Did the construction crew forget to finish the job? It’s not only an eyesore, but dangerous.”

Red Phone: Dear What is Up, Red Phone contacted Scott Creer, senior civil engineer with the city, who said they are aware of the rough roadway on that portion of Peet Road.

“The developer of the Mission Ranch project is responsible for addressing that problem and has been working with the adjacent property owner to improve the easterly half of Peet Road in this area,” Creer said. “The installation of the final lift of pavement to smooth out the road was to be completed with other road work in that area and does require the proper coordination with the adjacent property owner. However, the developer has not been able to secure the necessary right-of-way from the adjacent property owner to complete the frontage improvements as planned. Therefore, the developer plans on installing the final lift of pavement with the next phase of the Mission Ranch subdivision which is scheduled to break ground (in October).”

Good caller, hope that answers your question.

Some candidates are covering sings

“Red Phone, I was out walking my dog and noticed that someone placed a Jerry Brown campaign sign over Meg Whitman’s. As I started paying attention, I noticed all of hers were covered, mostly by Jerry Brown posters, but one by Barbara Boxer and one by Gavin Newsom. I’m not a partisan person, but this seems at the very least tacky and mean spirited. Is there some law they are breaking or campaign code of ethics they are violating? Thanks!”

Red Phone: Dear Are They Breaking the Law, according to City Attorney Danny Wan, any sign in a public right of way is illegal, and because they are illegal they are not entitled to that space. So is covering an illegal sign also illegal? This is an issue that arises every year in every city. Some cities spend money to enforce municipal codes, while others do nothing.

As far as the ethical part, it’s obviously underhanded to cover another candidate’s sign. But, is it ethical to post signs in illegal places to begin with? You see the conundrum? Only in politics would something like this arise.

Hope that helps, good caller.
