The Amgen Tour of California and its local partners are preparing a week full of community cycling-related events leading up to the tour’s May 16 time trial stage, which starts and ends in downtown Morgan Hill.

The men’s Tour of California is considered one of the most prestigious professional cycling races in the world. The race features seven stages from Long Beach to Sacramento.

The Tour’s Stage 4 Time Trial will take place on a 22-mile course that starts at Dunne Avenue and Monterey Road before embarking through rural roads to the west and north of Morgan Hill. With racers starting one at a time at staggered intervals, the time trial is expected to last from the late morning May 16 to the early afternoon.

Tour and city officials are planning a downtown Lifestyle Festival during the time trial event.

Local business and tourism proponents are eager to showcase Morgan Hill on the internationally broadcast Time Trial, and have organized a full schedule of events to get residents and spectators excited about the Tour of California.

May 4 Bike Party

Casual, avid and recreational cyclists are invited to deck their bikes with lights and sound systems, and dress up in costume for the 7:30pm bike ride around downtown Morgan Hill May 4. The ride starts and ends at Bike Therapy, 17540 Depot Street. For more information, visit the Facebook page titled “Morgan Hill Bike Party.”

Kickoff concert

<

An Amgen Tour of California Kickoff Concert featuring Isaiah Pickett is scheduled for 6pm to 9:30pm May 11 at the Morgan Hill Downtown Amphitheater, 17000 Monterey Road.

Mother’s Day Ride/Pancake Breakfast

<

A brief Mother’s Day Ride with Mayor Steve Tate will begin and end 9am May 13 at the Grange, 40 E. Fourth Street. After the ride, enjoy a pancake breakfast hosted by Bike Therapy. Register on the City of Morgan Hill’s website at morganhill.ca.gov.

Specialized Open House

<

Specialized Bicycle Components—one of Morgan Hill’s largest employers and one of the world’s best-known bicycle companies—will open its local facilities to residents and fans for a May 15 open house, from 5:30pm to 8pm. The event at Specialized headquarters, 15130 Concord Circle, features tours of the Specialized wind tunnel and bike museum, as well as food trucks.

The Amgen Tour of California Time Trial is scheduled to start 12:45pm May 16 in downtown Morgan Hill. Check the city’s website for road closures and other information about how the event will impact your neighborhood.
