Police are searching for the driver of a 1993 Acura who hit and killed a 43-year-old man on Hecker Pass Highway and fled the scene.

About 7 p.m. Saturday, an Acura carrying six people hit a pedestrian crossing Hecker Pass Highway near Whitehurst Road, according to the California Highway Patrol. The vehicle struck the man on the right leg, throwing him onto the windshield. The man then hit his head on the roof, causing major head trauma. Paramedics declared the victim dead at the scene.

The impact also shattered the windshield, causing facial lacerations to the driver and front passenger, police said.

Police found the Acura abandoned about half a mile east of the accident scene – not quite half way between Whitehurst and Watsonville roads – police said. Gilroy police responded with a K-9 unit but lost the trail of the car’s occupants south of the scene, police said.

At 10:49 p.m., police received a call from Gilroy Gardens security reporting several people talking about being in an accident, police said. Police located the Acura’s five passengers, who identified the driver as a resident of the Rodriguez migrant labor camp. Police could not, however, locate the suspect.
