For the second consecutive year, the Britton Middle School math team qualified for the state MathCounts Championship during the Feb. 2 Monterey Bay Chapter MathCounts Competition in Salinas.
Also for the second year in a row, a Britton student has earned first place in the individual competition.
The competition included 81 sixth- through eighth-grade students from 14 schools. Morgan Hill schools were represented by 27 students from Britton Middle, Martin Murphy Middle, Charter School of Morgan Hill, Nordstrom Elementary, Paradise Valley Elementary and Los Paseos Elementary.
In the individual competition, Britton seventh grader Mark Holmstrom earned first place and advances to the state championship at UC-Davis in March. Other notable place finishers included Paradise Valley sixth grader James Gabbard who finished in eighth place, Britton eighth grader Ernest Yip who finished in tenth place and Martin Murphy eighth grader Roger Kuo who finished in 11th place.
In the team competition, the Britton team took second place, also qualifying them for advancement to the state championship. Team members included Yip, Holmstrom, Jingyi Wei and Amber Thomas.
A third "Jeopardy style" Countdown Round Competition was held for the top 12 individuals in the overall competition. James Gabbard, a sixth-grader from Paradise Valley Elementary, was awarded third place.
Morgan Hill Unified School District students in the sixth, seventh and eighth grade participate in the program, sponsored by the American Institute of Mathematics. Executive Director Brian Conrey leads the program in Morgan Hill.
MathCounts is an international middle school math competition program. In preparation for these competitions, all Morgan Hill MathCounts teams have been training weekly throughout the school year.
