For the fourth consecutive year, the Britton Middle School math team qualified for the state Mathcounts Championship during the Feb. 20 Monterey Bay Chapter competition in Salinas. Also for the fourth year in a row, a Britton student has earned first place in the individual competition.

The mission of Mathcounts is to increase enthusiasm for and enhance achievement in middle school mathematics. Britton's Math Department, under the direction of Patricia Finck, runs a club and competition program to give students a deeper understanding of a variety of mathematics concepts. Many of the students in the program began their math adventures in elementary school by participating in the outstanding math programs that are sponsored by the American Institute of Mathematics.

Eight students from Britton, James Gabbard, Tara McLaughlin, Adarsh Cherra, Roos deVries, Samrawit Haile, Savanah Trewman, Keith Arbogast, and Kayla Harper Alvarez were selected to compete in the Mathcounts Chapter Competition.

The competition included 74 sixth- through eighth-grade students from 13 schools. Thirty-four students represented six Morgan Hill schools from Britton and Martin Murphy middle schools, Charter School of Morgan Hill, Nordstrom and Jackson elementary schools, and Oakwood School.

In the individual competition, Britton eighth-grader James Gabbard earned first place and Tara McLaughlin earned second place.

In the team competition, the Britton team took second place, qualifying them for advancement to the state championship at Stanford University on March 20. Advancing team members included Gabbard, McLaughlin, Cherra and deVries.

A third "Jeopardy style" Countdown Round Competition was held for the top 12 individuals in the overall competition. Gabbard and McLaughlin qualified with Gabbard capturing first place for the second year in a row in this category.

Executive Director Brian Conrey leads the program in Morgan Hill. Lead coaches for AIM programs are Lori Mains, Elizabeth Mandel and Dave Holmstrom. Student coaches are Mark Holmstrom and Peter Mains.
