Hollister's animal control bureau received a puppy from a concerned citizen who reported finding the dog inside a paper McDonald's bag on the side of the road near San Juan Bautista, according to a press release from the Hollister Police Department, which oversees animal control.

Police received the puppy, which was about 17 days old and appeared to be a yellow lab or golden retriever, on Dec. 8, according to the statement. The citizen found the dog inside a bag in the area of Mission Vineyard Road.

As he passed the bag, he noticed it moving and stopped to check it, according to police. The man found the puppy and brought it to the animal shelter in Hollister. It's unknown if the puppy was placed on the side of the road or thrown from a vehicle, according to police.

The puppy was checked and determined to be in good health, and it has been placed temporarily in a local animal foster home, according to the statement.

Anyone with information on this incident or any other animal cruelty cases can call the Hollister Police Department's Animal Control Bureau at 636-4320. Persons wishing to remain anonymous may call WeTIP at (800) 78-CRIME. Information provided to WeTIP may qualify for a reward.
