Red Phone: New directional signs: Who and why?
Aug 3, 2009
 By Morgan Hill Staff

"OK Red Phone, I am trying, I really am, but I cannot understand who decided we needed these gigantic signs placed all over Morgan Hill. How much did they cost? Who designed them? They are ugly and very industrial looking. They could have been very cute shaped like a mushroom. But best of all who decided where they are placed? The one on Watsonville Road at Santa Teresa Boulevard going east obstructs the stop sign. The one going west on Main Street going up a blind hill over the freeway, is there why? Who in the world is coming from that direction is not familiar where things are? Please fill me in. I wait with bated breath."

Red Phone: Dear Waiting With Bated Breath, Red Phone contacted Joyce Maskell, who first thanked you for bringing to the city's attention the sign on Santa Teresa Boulevard. She said staff would make appropriate changes to ensure the new directional sign does not block the stop sign. As to the process, Maskell said the city-wide and downtown directional sign project was requested and approved by the City Council/Redevelopment Agency Board.

"The design of the signs was guided by a citizens committee comprised of property owners, business owners and residents, and led by the design firm of Graphic Solutions," she said. "The consultant and city/agency staff together determined the placement of the signs, with the primary goal of directing visitors to and from the downtown, public facilities, recreational and tourist attractions in town." The cost to manufacture and install the signs was about $170,000.

Hope that answers your question, good caller.

Dangerous turn with sign missing

"Red Phone, I noticed the right turn only sign coming out of Kragen's and Rite-Aid onto Monterey Road has been removed, either by vandals or by authority, would you check into this as it's a very dangerous unlawful left turn

Red Phone: Dear Concerned, Red Phone contacted the city's public works department. "The No Left Turn" sign was mounted on a "Stop Sign" pole and is in fact missing. The brackets that once held the sign are still in place.

The city does not maintain signs that face inward to private parking lots, the property owner is responsible. In this case, it is Nest International in Gloucester City, New Jersey. Red Phone left a message with the person responsible and will update readers as soon as possible.
