About 30 Morgan Hill residents planted 70 oaks and other valley-native trees at the San Pedro Percolation Ponds on Feb. 21 to beauty the Santa Clara Valley Water District site.
"There's a lot of people who use the trail," said Ken Mort, a member of the San Pedro Ponds Trail Volunteers, which organized the event. "I've talked to them and they say it'll be nice to put in trees to make the place look like it did when oaks were abundant in the valley more than 100 years ago."
The trees were provided at cost by the Our City Forest, a nonprofit based in San Jose. They will go into the registrar of the Shaklee Corporation's "Million Trees" campaign to promote the planting of trees to improve the world's environment.
The San Pedro Ponds Trail Volunteers plan at least two more tree plantings at the ponds which are located in Morgan Hill at Hill Road and San Pedro Avenue. For details on how to volunteer or contribute funds for tree purchases, call 776-2933.
Unemployment rate rises - again
The Morgan Hill unemployment rate reached 12 percent in January, according to preliminary data released by the state labor department, up 2 percentage points from December.
Of the 18,000 workers in Morgan Hill, 2,100 were unemployed during January, surpassing Morgan Hill's high after the Dot Com bust. Unemployment for 2002 and 2003 was 10.8 percent. In January 2008, only 6.7 percent of Morgan Hill's workforce was unemployed.
For January 2008, San Martin's unemployment rate was 21 percent while Gilroy's was almost 14 percent.
