Oakwood sophomore Samta Batra wins MH Rotary Youth Speech Contest

Oakwood High School sophomore Samta Batra has won the Rotary Club of Morgan Hill's 2009 Youth Speech Contest. Her five-minute speech on the theme "Make Dreams Real" was delivered in competition before the club on Feb. 11.

Samta is the daughter of Atul and Suman Batra of Morgan Hill. She plans to study medicine in college.

Samta won the $100 prize and earned the opportunity to advance to the semi-finals in Rotary International's Area Speech Contest. She will compete on Feb. 26 with the winners of competitions sponsored by Rotary clubs in Gilroy, San Juan Bautista and Hollister.

Second place honors in the club competition went to Alex Salvador, a Live Oak High School senior, and third place to Gabriela Cinkova, a Live Oak High School sophomore.

Club speech contest chair was Dr. Benjamin Stein of Rotary Club of Morgan Hill and judging was by local members of Toastmasters International.

The purpose of the Youth Speech Contest is to help young people understand the importance of speaking effectively before a group; to expand public knowledge - especially among young people - of what Rotary is and does throughout the world; and to allow high school students the opportunity to compete for prize money that will be used to further the student's education.
