A Morgan Hill man was convicted for defrauding insurance companies at his Los Gatos chiropractic office to the tune of a quarter-million dollars earlier this month, according to a press release from the Santa Clara County District Attorney's office.

Robert A. Demarco, 42 of Blue Jay Drive, pleaded guilty to grand theft and presenting a false insurance claim in May, and was sentenced in Superior Court Nov. 3. He received a two-year prison sentence, and was ordered to pay more than $250,000 in restitution, the press release stated.

As the owner and operator of a Los Gatos chiropractic office, Demarco submitted fraudulent billings to nine different insurance companies. He was caught when 25 patients received billing statements that did not match the treatment they received.

Demarco submitted the false claims from January 2004 to February 2007. The total amount of the fraud was $256,916.09. He was arrested in February 2007.
