The second annual Cuts for the Kids, a charity event at Tiffany's Salon on Monterey Road, raised $3,700 during the Taste of Morgan Hill this weekend. The money will be donated to P.A. Walsh Elementary School's autism day school program. Special education teacher Joan Best said her annual budget is just $300. The money will go towards classroom supplies including crafts. Stylists from five different area salons volunteered for the event. Donors received a free haircut for their generosity. This was the second annual Cuts for the Kids, and the participants more than doubled last year's success. Best will be presented with the check on Monday. Tiffany Goller's 7-year-old son has autism. Goller said stylists from Hair Junction, Diana's Hair Crafters, Johnette's European Skin and Body Care and Head to Toes Salon "were touched and wanted to help."

Rafting trip rings in new year
Pencils, paper, classrooms and new schedules ... When you think of the first day back to school, what comes to mind? For some 50 high school students, their first day was anything but typical: arriving ninth- through 12th-graders at Mount Madonna School were toting sleeping bags and swimsuits. The occasion? A beginning of the year, four-day white water river rafting and camping trip.
"We do this trip to bring the high school together at the beginning of the year," said Ward Mailliard, a longtime MMS teacher and trip leader. "It is an opportunity for incoming ninth graders and new students to share an adventure with returning students. Everyone works and plays together and it helps start the year on a high note of cooperation and fun."

MyVote California Student Mock Election coming up
The MyVote California Student Mock Election will be Oct. 30 when students voted for one of the presidential tickets and on Propositions 1A through 12. The Secretary of State will announce the mock election results on Oct. 31.
MyVote California is a civic engagement program that helps students understand the democratic process and builds electoral enthusiasm among the voters of tomorrow. It also offers students hands-on lessons in politics and public policy. Participating schools and teachers can use the mock election curriculum to inspire classroom discussions about the candidates and their platforms. Working with the California Campaign for the Civic Mission of Schools and the National Student/Parent Mock Election, the mock election aims to develop students' civic engagement habits early and reinforce the importance of voting in a democracy.
Teachers often dig into their own pockets to ensure that their students have the basics. Morgan Hill School District instructors can rely on the Teachers Aid Coalition for a little extra help. To raise funds for the TAC, there's a series of wine events that include tasting and an entertaining wine education segment. Last year it was all about port wines. This year it's cabernets being featured with "A Salute to King Cab." It wouldn't be a true tribute to a king without Elvis who'll be swinging his hips and guitar, and singing to the event-goers at Clos La Chance Winery at 6 p.m., Oct. 23. Clos LaChance winemaker, Stephen Tebb will speak on Cabernet Sauvignon wines while Jona Denz-Hamilton hosts. "A Salute to King Cab" will feature Cabernet Sauvignon from local wineries at the Clos La Chance Winery overlooking CordeValle golf course. Food from Le Bistro and fruit offerings from Andy's Orchard will pair nicely with the Cabs from Sycamore Creek, Pedrizzetti, Clos LaChance, and Guglielmo wineries. Silent auction and raffle adds to this fun event.
