Construction abounds at Morgan Hill schools
Sep 10, 2008
 By - Staff Writer

"A lot of good things are happening" when it comes to the improvement of facilities at Morgan Hill schools, the district's deputy superintendent said at the board of trustees' regular monthly meeting Tuesday.

Bonnie Tognazzini presented a list of construction projects of varying sizes that are either complete or near completion throughout Morgan Hill Unified District.

One of the bigger changes occurred at Morgan Hill Community Adult School, where five portable and three stationary classrooms were modernized.

Next door at Britton Middle School, the campus data network was upgraded with fiber optic lines and a new surveillance system was installed. A new locker room under construction is expected to be completed by Thanksgiving.

Lighting was improved in the parking areas as well as the access road serving both Britton and the adult school.

The Live Oak High School campus is in the midst of extensive renovations and additions. Some classrooms and storage rooms were demolished and replaced with a brand new computer lab, yearbook room, and staff room. The gym received a new roof, and the facade and interior renovation of the administrative building will continue for at least six more months. A new theater building at Live Oak is about 25 percent complete.

The entire campus of Central High School received a new paint job.

"We look like one big school now," said principal Irene Macias-Morris of the two-building school that was formerly adorned in mismatched colors.

Central High also has a new roof for its outdoor lunch shelter, and installation of a new security fence began yesterday afternoon, the principal said.

All the buildings on the campus of Nordstrom Elementary School were painted over the summer, said Tognazzini, and a new portable classroom was installed there.

At San Martin-Gwinn Elementary, several repairs were made to parts of structures that had succumbed to dry-rot, a necessary step to improve safety at the school, Tognazzini said.

Numerous other minor repairs and routine maintenance were completed throughout the district before classes started.

Tognazzini praised the grounds crew, who "really worked hard" on landscaping and the athletic fields during the summer.
