Light rail work to close two stations
The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority announced today the Blossom Hill and Cottle light rail stations in south San Jose will be closed for the next six weeks, beginning Aug. 16, as the station platforms are retrofitted to provide easier boarding for mobility-impaired riders.
While the stations are closed, VTA will provide light rail riders at Blossom Hill and Cottle stations a free bus ride to a nearby open light rail station. Since light rail trains continue through the closed stations without stopping, only light rail passengers beginning or ending their trips at these two stations are affected by the closure. All other passengers can continue to ride light rail to and from their destinations without disruption.
The substitute bus bridge service for Blossom Hill and Cottle runs with the same service frequency as light rail, which is every 15 minutes for most of the service day. Passengers, however, are urged to allow extra time to reach their destination when using the bus bridge service. Personalized trip planning services are available by calling VTA customer service at (408) 321-2300.
Arbor Day Foundation offers 10 free dogwoods
Everyone who joins the Arbor Day Foundation during August 2008 will receive 10 free white flowering dogwood trees.
The free trees are part of the nonprofit Foundation's Trees for America campaign, a program dedicated to environmental stewardship through the planting of trees.
"The white flowering dogwoods will add year-round beauty to homes and neighborhoods," said John Rosenow, chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation. "Dogwoods have showy spring flowers, scarlet autumn foliage and red berries that attract songbirds all winter."
The trees will be shipped postpaid between Oct. 15 and Dec. 10, at the right time for planting. The 6- to 12-inch trees are guaranteed to grow or they will be replaced free of charge. Planting instructions are enclosed with each shipment of trees.
Members of the Arbor Day Foundation will also receive "The Tree Book", which includes information about tree planting and care.
To receive the free trees, send a $10 membership contribution to Ten Dogwoods, Arbor Day Foundation, 100 Arbor Ave., Nebraska City, NE 68410, by Aug. 31, 2008, or join online at arborday.org.
