County to hold community open house, workshop for fairgrounds
At a Santa Clara county Board of Supervisors public workshop on Aug. 26 at 10 a.m., County Executive Pete Kutras will announce the results of a year-long developer selection process for development of the fairgrounds. The Board of Supervisors and public will receive a presentation from staff and Catellus Development Group, the recommended development team. Public participation is encouraged in this first opportunity for board and public discussion on the proposed development before the formal public outreach process is initiated by the City of San Jose.
At the board meeting on Sept. 9, Kutras is expected to recommend to the board that the county enter into an exclusive negotiating agreement with Catellus. The Catellus development team emerged as the number one recommended developer in the county's request for proposal process.
The county will host an community open house at the fairgrounds prior to the workshop to introduce the recommended developer to the community. The open house will be held Aug. 21 from 5-7 p.m. Every half-hour there will be a brief presentation from staff, and there will be an opportunity at each presentation for questions from the community.
Vehicle theft in Calif. on decline, again
Combined efforts of California law enforcement agencies, coupled with prevention efforts b y the public, have made for a substantial decrease in the number of vehicle thefts statewide for a second consecutive year. Last year's 8 percent decrease follows a 5.5 percent reduction in vehicle theft in California in 2006.
"These numbers reflect the hard work of law enforcement and the public and while they are encouraging, there's' still a lot of work to be done," said California Highway Patrol Commissioner Joe Farrow.
In 2007, 227, 412 vehicles were stolen in California. On a verage a vehicle is stolen every three minutes in California. The estimated total value of the vehicles was $1.4 billion. Of the vehicles stole, 88.2 percent were successfully recovered.
Assistant county executive to act as acting county executive
The Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors announced Tuesday that Assistant County Executive Gary Graves will serve as Acting County Executive, beginning Nov. 1, when County Executive Pete Kutras retires.
"Graves is uniquely suited to provide stability to the county organization because of his tenure and intimate knowledge of county programs and services, his financial background and his involvement in statewide issues that affect counties," said Santa Clara County Board Chair Pete McHugh.
Graves has served in a variety of county executive management positions since 1984. For the past five years, Graves served as assistant county executive, during which he directly supervised Information Services, Procurement, Facilities and Fleet, the Office of Budget and Analysis and the Office of Emergency Services.
Child Support Services to provide school supplies
The Third Annual Backpack and School Supply Giveaway for children will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15 at the Department of Child Support Services, 2851 Junction Avenue in San Jose, to assist low income families.
