The last Morgan Hill mushrooms could soon be driven over by flashy new cars as an auto mall sprouts where the city's well-known crop once grew.
Three new auto dealerships are being planned for the 19 acres north of the Ford Store on Condit Road. The acres are now South Valley Mushroom Farms.
David and Akiko Kubos own the bulk of the property, and have applied for an environmental study so that the project can go before the planning commission, said Planning Manager Jim Rowe.
One of the dealerships would be nine acres and the two others would be five each, Rowe said.
The dealerships would be located north of the Ford store, bordered by Condit Road on the east, U.S. 101 on the west and Diana Avenue on the north.
The planning commission will consider the project as early as September, Rowe said. From there, it will go before the city council.
South Valley Mushroom Farms Office Manager Christine Kubogamell confirmed that her parents, the Kubos, had been looking to sell their property for years. Kubogamell referred media questions to the Kubos, who declined to comment.
Kubogamell said her parents and extended family, who have owned and operated the farm for decades, are getting older and are looking to retire.
