The Morgan Hill Police Department has created a challenging set of goals for the 2008-09 fiscal year, according to Morgan Hill Police Chief Bruce Cumming, who presented the new goals, along with the department's accomplishments during the 2007-08 fiscal year, to the Morgan Hill City Council during its budget workshop.
Some of the goals for the new year, which begins July 1, include reinstating the department's K-9 program with funding from community donations and implementing a city-wide telephone notification system.
Cumming also hopes to increase the department's 36 sworn officers with seven more sworn officers and two more multi-service officers, and the city has held two town-hall style meetings to gather community input on how to address the increase in staffing. Councilmembers may put a utility tax on the November ballot to pay for the additional officers.
The department had a productive year, Cumming said. Among the accomplishments, Cumming told council members, is the creation of a regional SWAT team with the Gilroy Police Department and the implementation of the anti-gang GREAT program in Morgan Hill schools.
The Gang Resistance Education And Training program is administered in Morgan Hill by Officer Mike Nelsen and funded by Morgan Hill's Redevelopment Agency.
