Former councilwoman elected director of Federation of State Medical Boards
Hedy Chang, former Morgan Hill councilwoman, has been elected as the director of the Federation of State Medical Boards' board of directors at the organization's annual House of Delegates meeting on May 3 in San Antonio, Texas.

Chang will serve a three-year term as director. Chang was appointed to the state medical board's Department of Licensing by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2004.

Memorial Day travel to decline slightly
The number of Californians traveling during the Memorial Day holiday will drop slightly compared to last year, according to the latest estimate from AAA of Northern California, with more than 4.6 million Californians are expected to travel 50 miles or more this Memorial Day weekend.

This is the first overall decrease in Memorial Day holiday weekend travel since 2002.

"Travelers are feeling the effects of a financial crunch," explained Cynthia Harris, spokesperson for AAA of Northern California. "But despite the rising cost of gas, accommodations and other travel related expenses, we will see a significant number of Californians traveling this holiday weekend."

AAA projects more than 3.4 million Californians will take to the highways to reach their weekend destinations. About 710,000 Californians plan to fly over the holiday, a decrease of 0.2 percent from 2007.

According to AAA, car rentals are significantly higher than last year, at $45 a day compared to $31 a year ago. Travelers can expect to spend an average of $162 per night for lodging. Overall, the average household will spend $600 or less over the holiday weekend.

"Many families will travel closer to home, stay with relatives or friends, eat at cheaper restaurants and travel fewer days in order to save money," said Harris.

Nationwide, AAA estimates 37.9 million Americans will travel this Memorial Day weekend. About 31.7 million of those will travel by car.

County to allocate more than $3 million in federal funds to affordable housing
Santa Clara County supervisors have voted to adopt the fiscal year 2009 Action Plan to allocate $3 million in federal funding for several housing-related programs and community service programs, including Community Development Block Grant, HOME Investment Partnership Act, and American Dream Down payment Initiative programs.

"Providing decent housing for all residents is one of the county's highest priorities," said Supervisor Don Gage. "The federal funds that the county is allocating will provide much-needed housing options for the families in this valley."

FBI releases preliminary statistics for law enforcement officer killed in 2007
According to preliminary statistics released by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, 57 law enforcement officers were feloniously killed in the line of duty during 2007. Geographically, 31 of the officers were killed in the South, nine in the West, nine in the Midwest and seven in the Northeast. One officer was slain in Puerto Rico. The total number of officers killed is nine higher than in 2006.

Sixteen deaths occurred as a result of ambush situations, 16 died during arrest situations, 11 were killed while handling traffic pursuits or stops, six died responding to disturbance calls, three while investigating suspicious persons or circumstances, three during tactical situations, one while conducting investigative activities and one while handling and transporting prisoners.

A breakdown of weapons used in these slayings revealed that firearms were used in the majority of incidents. Of the 55 officers killed with firearms, 38 were killed with handguns, nine with shotguns and eight with rifles. Two officers were killed with vehicles.

At the time they were killed, 35 law enforcement officers were wearing body armor. Eleven officers fired their weapons, and 14 of the slain law enforcement officers attempted to fire their weapons. Four officers had their weapons stolen, and two officers were slain with their own weapons.
