A Marina man was arrested Saturday afternoon for allegedly breaking into the apartment of his former girlfriend and beating her up.
Harvey Gomes, 42, was booked into Santa Clara County jail for alleged burglary and domestic violence. He was also on parole.
According to Special Operations Sgt. Jerry Neumayer, Gomes wanted to reunite with his former girlfriend, had been calling her Saturday, and at approximately 4 p.m., showed up at her apartment at the Morgan Hill Apartments on Monterey Road.
He allegedly kicked in the door, breaking the door frame, and his former girlfriend ran into the bathroom. Gomes allegedly then kicked the bathroom door open and began hitting her in the face and head. She got out of the bathroom and ran into the other room to call her mother, Neumayer said, but he grabbed her and struck her in the face again with a closed fist. She told police she tried to escape by removing the air conditioner from the window, but while she was trying to climb out, he poured beer on her and pulled her back.
He then left the apartment and began walking south on Monterey Road. Neighbors who saw and heard the incident reported it to police. As officers were responding, Sgt. Shane Palsgrove saw the suspect the neighbors had described, whom officers later learned was Gomes, walking in the area of Monterey Road and Central Avenue. He arrested Gomes without incident.
The woman refused medical treatment, although her lip was bleeding, the left side of her face was swollen, and she had bruises on both of her arms, Neumayer said.
Officers arranged for a protective order for the woman.
