Library celebrates Earth Day with recyclable book bags

Beginning today - Earth Day - the Morgan Hill Library will have reusable book bags available for purchase for $1 each. The woven bags, made from recycled material, will replace the free plastic bags the library has previously provided to patrons for carrying books, DVDs and other materials home and back.

"The premise of a library is really about recycling - sharing and reusing resources in order to reduce consumption," said Melinda Cervantes, Santa Clara County librarian. "We continue to look for ways to contribute to a sustainable future."

Although plastic can be recycled, it is a petroleum product and its manufacture uses oil and energy resources, according to Cervantes. An estimated 100 billion plastic bags end up in landfills where they can take more than 1,000 years to degrade.

Other ways the library helps reduce the impact on the environment include the Electronic Library 24/7 which can be accessed online from home or work, reducing the number of trips to the library for research, telephone and e-mail notification of holds and overdues to save paper and postal service, and a robust collection of materials on carbon dioxide emissions, global warming and other environmental issues.

To call attention to global warming, the library will also launch today an online "research" scavenger hunt with prizes.

For more information about the recyclable book bags, visit the accounts desk at the library. For more information on Santa Clara County Library, visit the Web site

Health fair Saturday at Centennial Recreation Center

Morgan Hill Chamber of Commerce members and city officials have made environment and human health a highlighted issue at the second annual Health and Wellness Fair.

The fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Centenial Recreation Center.

Conventional medicine booths will stand side by side with holistic healers, and fair sponsor South Valley Disposal and Recycling's general manager, Phil Couchee, will speak at the fair about the connection between environmental health and human wellness.

Attending again this year is the National Marrow Donor Registry. Last year, the fair produced 35 new registered marrow donors. This year, the registry will focus on increasing registered donors from diverse ethnic backgrounds.

Other features at the fair will be healthy cooking demonstrations and prize drawings.
