Paradise Valley Elementary School student Hanna Doting and San Martin/Gwinn Elementary School student Sandra Arellano have been honored by the Morgan Hill Rotary Club with Outstanding Student Achievement awards.

Hanna was recognized along with parents David and Sharon Doting, Paradise Valley Principal Kathy Kelly and teacher Johanna Miller.

Sandra was recognized with parents Javier and Mirella Arellano, San Martin/Gwinn Principal P. J. Foehr and teacher Denise Simmons.

The students received their awards along with U.S. saving bonds during the Feb. 6 Rotary Club meeting. The awards recognize and reward outstanding student achievement including academic performance, individual leadership, commitment to community and overall commitment to excellence.

All public and private Morgan Hill schools have the opportunity to annually select one outstanding student for the honor. Awards are announced on a rotating basis throughout the year.

Sister City Exchange Program

Parents of sixth- and seventh-grade students are invited to an information meeting at 6 p.m., Feb. 28, at Morgan Hill Unified School District headquarters, 15600 Concord Circle to discuss the new Sister City Exchange Program with Mizuho, Japan.

The City of Morgan Hill and the school district are beginning the program in July. The program is looking for families of sixth- and seventh-grade students who would be willing to host a Japanese student age 12-14 for a week this summer.

Morgan Hill students will also travel to Mizuho, Japan, in the summer of 2009 in what is hoped will be an annual cultural exchange.

Fourth-graders need support for trip

The fourth-grade students at P.A. Walsh Elementary School are trying to accomplish something extraordinary! During this school year much of the social studies curriculum revolves around learning about the state. A field trip is being planned for early spring where every fourth-grade student would visit Sacramento!

This field trip would include taking a commercial bus to Sacramento where the children would tour the State Capitol building, tour the popular Suter's Fort, go to the famous train museum and visit Old Town Sacramento.

Unfortunately, the cost of a trip is substantial. The students are excited about the possibility of the Sacramento trip. They, along with their parents, are having several fundraising events to help accomplish their goal.

They're asking the public to consider making a tax-deductible donation to them by making a check out to P.A. Walsh School/Fourth Grade Sacramento Trip. Donors' names will be published in the school's newsletter.

Details: Karen MacDonald or Kelly Herrell at 201-6500.

Silicon Valley Reads author visits Morgan Hill

Bo Caldwell, author of the 2008 Silicon Valley Reads selection, "The Distant Land of My Father," will discuss her novel at the Morgan Hill Library at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 28. The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

This is the sixth year of Silicon Valley Reads One Book, a program that encourages everyone in Silicon Valley to read the same book at the same time and then gather together to discuss it.

Sponsors of the Morgan Hill event include Friends of the Library, Morgan Hill Times, City of Morgan Hill, American Association of University Women Morgan Hill Branch, BookSmart and the Morgan Hill Library.

"The Distant Land of My Father" tells the story of Anna, who lives in exotic pre-war Shanghai with her wealthy young parents. Later, when Anna and her mother flee the Japanese-occupied city to return to California, her father stays behind. Through Anna's memories and her father's journal, readers learn of his fall from charismatic millionaire to tortured prisoner. Anna must grapple with her own issues of love for her father, feelings of abandonment and the possibility of forgiveness and reconciliation.

"The Distant Land of My Father" may be purchased at BookSmart or at the event at a 10 percent discount.

For more information, visit www.siliconvalleyreads.com, or contact the library at 779-3196.

n State deficit increases classroom woes

The Teachers Aide Coalition, recipient of the 2006 Gavilan College Spirit Award, has announced its annual spring classroom supply giveaway. Teachers in the Morgan Hill Unified School District will be able to get items for their classes on Feb. 28 at P.A. Walsh Elementary School, 353 W. Main Avenue.

TAC President Roger Beaulieu hopes the community will step up to help. Donations of school supplies or money to buy specific items would help teachers and students. Volunteers are also needed for the 2008 classroom supply giveaways, and TAC's other events.

Every year the group finds a fun wine-related way to drum up support for local teachers. A "Salute to King Cab" (as in Cabernet) is being planned as the next TAC fundraiser. TAC's fundraising chairman Jon Hatakeyama announced that the tasting and talk will take place on Oct. 23 at Clos La Chance Winery. The featured wine discussion will be by culinary expert, Dorothy McNett. KBAY radio personality Jona Denz-Hamilton will act as host.

Those interested in volunteering or donating to the fall giveaway in October should contact Roger Beaulieu at 779-5308 or by e-mail at booman6@charter.net.
